That means that someone else testified that he said those things. A far cry from hearing him actually say something in a recording that he later admitted was him speaking.

ETA: Don't get me wrong, I believe he probably said all of those things, at least in sentiment if not in exact words. But when it comes to reporting, and to people's gut reactions, you can't compare any of that to recorded audio.

Except that it's a private club with rules (its bylaws and constitution). If the rules don't explicitly provide for the ability to force an owner to sell in this type of circumstance, then Sterling has stronger legal ground to fight a forced sale.

I like the bit toward the bottom about the tax implications. That puts at least a dent in my earlier comment that the best course of action for Sterling is to sell.

I'm sure the NBA Constitution has provisions governing it, but you can bet your season tickets that Silver is going to have this guy move heaven and earth to argue the NBA cannot. Or that this conduct didn't warrant the penalty. Or that there are antitrust violations. Or...

Now that it's come out Sterling supposedly has cancer, it's pretty clear that tying this all up in court is the right move financially. He's 80 years old and has cancer. If he holds on to the team till he dies, that saves his heirs more than $300 million in taxes.
