Topic Wiki

This is the thread for all random/general questions about Southwest. The official airline code for Southwest is WN as SW was taken by Air Namibia, but many people on the forums refer to Southwest as SW since no one talks about Air Namibia ever.

For questions about any of the SW CC's, see here.
For questions about the SW Companion Pass, see here.
For questions about auto-checkin to SW flights, see here. (Follow the wiki to learn how to set it up.)

Same here, tried changing flight but it doesn't allow it for free

Looks like its dead?
Yup it's dead as per SW rep. It officially ended Saturday but I was able to switch yesterday evening.

Are they going to be enabling it again? Seems like it's been on and off recently

I don't recall them re-enabling it--once it dies it's dead. However, in the near future, they might permit changes for November, etc...

On a related note, I wonder why they are doing this? I thought that it was because they were cancelling flights due to aircraft shortages created by the MAX issue, but I would imagine that they have enough aircraft now to meet demand even without their MAXs?

I thought it was originally created due to the MAX issue but expired and re started to increase coronavirus demand.

AFAIK the aircraft have been grounded for months.

The aircraft have been grounded since March 2019 IIRC. But this is a weird way of increasing coronavirus demand. Why so it in such a roundabout way? Why not just sell all tickets at the lower price?

Regular people will pay what they find. Savy people will be enticed by the policy

But then they're missing out on all the regular people who would have booked at savvy people prices. In essence, this is a savvy person sale, but 98% of the flying public are regular people.

But BH, I was able to get r/t tickets from ISP to PBI for Thanksgiving for approx 8k points and $11.20. Probably won't end up using them, but good to have.

Lucky you. I found dates yesterday that were 6k points from BWI-CUN I also tried booking and canceling just to make sure that I can change dates. Today, now that I'm ready to book I find out that they just changed their policy. My dates are currently over 17k. What a shame.

If you're not set to a time, you can wait until this hopefully returns for November-January. Truthfully, before that time, I don't think that traveling to/from Mexico will be permitted or recommended.

If I buy an extra seat for myself on a WN flights before October 31, does that mean that I would get the whole row because the middle seat is blocked, or would the blocked seat be my extra seat?

When your other self doesn’t board they will give the seat to a standby (if applicable).  Also there are no assigned seats so anyone can just sit there since your other self isn’t occupying the seat.

The entire point of an extra seat is that there is no other self. I'm not buying one for me and another one for fake me; I'm buying two for myself, which is permitted. And I can just place a bag on the seat, and if someone asks me to move it, I would tell them that I bought that seat as well. The question is, push come to shove, did I really buy that seat or did I buy the middle seat?

If you buy the flight with points, you can cancel up to 10 min before the flight for a full refund. So try it out

No. Don’t check in the second ticket
If you buy the second ticket under your name they'll probably just attach it to the first one so once you check in the first one second one will also be checked in.
Need to buy the ticket under a diffrent name entirely.
