deviated septum
« on: May 06, 2014, 12:26:07 AM »
I was diagnosed with a deviated septum (no big deal, something blocking my nostrils) was wondering if other people have had this & what cures have they done, the Doc told me he'll start me on a nasal spray but that I'll almost definitely need surgery.

so I want to hear experiences...

I got one. Doesn't really bother me though so I just left it even though I am more prone to sinus infections

I have huge trouble breathing through my nose. According to one specialist its because my nose broke at some point in my life (which I am unaware of - but it is still possible) and got bent into one side. This creates constriction. As mucus to the mix and its very hard for me to breath. He says that it would be difficult to find a surgeon that could do this surgery correctly.

I have a big incentive to treat it anyway possible,
besides for my voice sounding very nasally, my nose is blocked all the time which sometimes affects my taste buds, meaning that I can't taste anything,
my wife also tells me that I don't breath normally at night

My mom had the surgery. It was real painful. She was out for 2 weeks. Worst part is it didn't even help or so she says.

Same thing with me. If i start having issues, i may get surgery, otherwise i have no time or interest to go through surgery and a cast on my nose.

Same here too. Doc told me   Years ago that I would need surgery or use this nasal rinse for the rest of my life. I never got the surgery and  dont use the rinse.

I was quoted 17k for surgery in the US. I might end up doing it in the Ukraine for $350 one day. (had my appendix removed for $80 there last year)

This may reveal my identity to some but George w Bush and Vladimir Putin discussed my broken nose on TV years ago.

I broke my nose and had a septoplasty and rhinoplasty performed.  It was ~$6500 about 5 years ago.  I used to get sinus infections a few times a year, but now I haven't had one since.

+100 Just try it. Maybe it makes sense to try a $0.25 piece of plastic on your nose before going under the knife for expensive surgery with dubious success?

Or maybe it's just not fancy enough.

Yes. I am very concerned about that too. Maybe that's why my Dr told me "not to many people can do this surgery right."...

I had it done about 8 years ago, and it was helpful. The first day was painful, but I was back to myself 2-3 days later. There's a frum doctor in the NY area who's really good at this, Dr. Goldstein from Queens. He's probably done thousands of these procedures and he claims to have a special way of doing it that minimizes the healing. If your in the NY area I would definitely advise seeing him.

Thats the dc that I use. He also developed the nose rinse that he suggested I use.

He is the one who told me that to fix mine - few surgeons would be able to do well and that he does not recommend it!
