Does 555 USD for 2 people make sense for the high speed train from Rome to Venice in 1st class? Looking at Italia rail unless there is better option.

You could rent a car for 1/2 that.

What site are you using to search? also are you taking direct or with stops?

never got ID'ed on trenitalia. and Lugano>Milan>Venice wasn't even asked for a ticket.
However I wouldn't advise traveling without one.

Thanks! wasn't planning on traveling without one, just with an extra one.

It's direct. I was on the site of Italia rail which seems to be cheapest when selecting a saver pass and then individually reserving a seat on the train. Really confusing is there a better way to do this?

True, and that's half of coach - its not for me though, I need to help someone with a trip and they want to take the train.

What does the saver pass do for you? What dates are you looking to go? did you try https://loco2.com/ they are easy to navigate.

There's an American call center for eurorail I think which I found very helpful. Should be able to find the phone number via Google. There was a charge to do it over the phone, but they might be able to help you with buying it online.

I've never been on a train in Europe and was wondering how strict they are with passenger names on tickets. More precisely I want to book all the seats in an overnight cabin but one of the seats will remain empty, will they give me trouble for having a ticket that technically doesn't belong to a person?
they never check names at all  and they dont even always come around to see If you actually have a tickets.

For some reason I thought it would be cheaper that way.

Ended up finding on Italia Rail for 319 for 2 ppl in first. Is that reasonable? Also it says that it's an e ticket is that how it works?
