Self cleaning your oven
« on: July 15, 2024, 10:01:16 PM »
I keep hearing that self cleaning kills your oven.
If it's really bad for the oven, why would they still have that feature?
Is that just how it eventually dies?
Any good data about which ovens this is more prevalent?

get your facts straight,
does it kill the oven?
I heard it removes the coating of the racks.
the ignitor of an oven is like a bulb which needs to be replaced every so often depending on your usage.
are you suggesting that the control board gets fried using self clean? how so.
are you suggesting that self clean burns down the oven frame, not really the case.

I keep hearing about it being a problem. What's the problem? I don't know either.
I am looking for facts.
What is the anecdotal evidence from people here on DDF?

Everyone that I know self cleans their ovens before pesach. I would assume that that's common practice in most frum homes.
We don't hear about a plague of dead ovens annually on erev pesach.

I think it depends on the model and if the heat was able to escape.
If there is a heat buildup and the heat is focused on the wrong part of the oven you can have problems.

Always see reminders from rabbanim & kashrus organizations b4 pesach, to make sure the vents are open and not blocked by aluminum foil for those that line the oven; besides burning it out.
Besides the issue of carbon monoxide, it can also ruin the controls and motherboard.

Yes. Seems to be true.

I've never tried this myself, but I heard that you can leave in the racks with the self cleaning, and after the clean, just smear some (edible) oil on the side of the racks, and the racks will slide out nice and sooth.
