First card a miles card?
« on: May 12, 2014, 06:32:13 PM »
I have had a credit card linked to my parents' account for the past few years. I am looking to get me own credit card as I am 19 now, the only issue is that I don't have any credit rating so I was wondering if it is still possibly to get a card with decent rewards in terms of MILES. I would like to use them towards flying to Israel eventually. Sorry for the stupid question, I would really appreciate some useful advice from the professionals on here.

BTW, I am a canadian citizen.

thanks for the info!
so can anyone suggest one specific card that I should apply for??

specifically if someone could suggest the most effective card for accumulating points that can be used towards a flight to ISRAEL - whicheaver airline ticket that could be acquired the fastest - that would be great!

Unfortunately I do not have a SSN (although I travel to the US quite often)
Yes, I was inquiring about cards for Canada. Any suggestions?

It is really frustrating trying to find a points card to start off with. I have spent hours researching and almost all the information on here seems to be US only. Does anyone have any suggestions? Whats about "American Express Aeorplan Gold Card?"?

Do u have any student card?
If not go in to any bank (I did Scotia) get a card.
Then in six months apply for a  Amex platinum

I do have a student card for the school I go to.

I currently use Presidents Choice financial - I went on their website and requested a MasterCard (http://www.pcfinancial.ca/whyjoin/) they offer rewards in grocery credit...something I don't need...but are you saying that it doesn't really matter which card I have for the first 6 months and then I should apply for amex and start accumulating real rewards?

I am confused as to how this all works. Sorry for all the questions.

I also just figure it was the simplest to request a credit card from the bank I use already, even though it doesn't seem like a great rewards program. It also seems like I can just order it online. But should I look around for something better at another bank?

If u already have a student card for six months then just go to american express and apply for a platinum card, first yr free. Spend the amount needed and u will get the bouns.
Keep in mind bc it's ur first time they will probably ask u for some proof at address etc

Better idea. Apply for a freedom card so you can have a card that you will never close and will extend your credit history. Eventually you can get a sapphire and you will be able to convert the freedom points to more valuable miles.

There's no "credit score" in Canada!
Just wait six months!

Meaning... There's not like credit and u have a score of 850 then ur the best in the country!
It's just looks at history of cards etc
But there's no like hard pulls etc (I don't think there is)
Amex told me over the phone to wait six months at least...

they told me that the score ranges from 300-800 and that there are credit pulls and that they use "transunion"
