If someone wants to help me out here, feel free. I've never done this, so I don't know how. Here's what I have and what I would like to have. I have a iphone 4s. I have ATT service. I can upgrade if I want to a 5 or whatever I want. They said I can have my phone unlocked (the 4s) because I have it over two years. I would like to have a phone that I can somehow use in Israel whenever I might go there (occasionally). And inexpensive. I do not know the details on how it works. Should I first unlock the phone before switching to another? And then what.

Definitely get the phone unlocked; you have nothing to lose.

Where and why would you lose your data?

Where and why would you lose your data?
They told me I have to first download (backup) my phone to my computer with itunes. I've had problems with that in the past. Assuming it works, what then? I get this sim card thingy and only pay when I use it? Different number? NY number, Israel number? Is there a place where this is all spoken about, but not in two hundred pages of a blog? SO I don't have to bother you?

This T-Mobile SIM will not help you overseas. You will need a post-paid SIM and plan. It will be an American number.
This is the thread about this service. Any questions you have, ask there, and if I can help, I gladly will. :)
