Consolidating Cards

If I have two Starwood cards, And I got the points on one and now have a new one that I want to consolidate the old one into,do I have to wait until I receive the points in the second one or I can consolidate them right away and still get the points for the second new card.

Whats the rush to consolidate?

I prefer not to close cards since it (albeit marginally) affects my credit, I just switch to a card with no annual fee.
