Admittedly, I didn't see that part of it, though the citations are in the bottom

Thanks, didn't notice that.

Anyway, this same study claims that ~100,000 years ago there were 13,900 Jews. Seems legit.

When they say Ashkenazi they don’t mean the broad definition we use (colloquially?) today. They mean Jews from the Ashkenaz region where some of the Baalei HaTosfos originated. I don’t know what the original population numbers were for those communities, but it’s widely believed by genealogists/historians that they were severely decimated היל״ת and that very few “Ashkenazi” Jews today are their descendants.

Yup, and Eastern European Jewry are descendants of the Khazars. Equally legit.

(The now debunked Khazar hypothesis)

I believe that when discussing genetics, Ashkenazi rmostly refers to European minus the Mediterranean basin. That would be France and Germany, yes, but also Eastern Europe as well (what would later become the Pale of Settelment and such).

Pardon my ignorance, but were jews living in Eastern Europe before the 1300's?

Sure. Jews have been living in Poland for at least 1000 years, for example.

I don’t think it’s plausible by any stretch of the imagination that there were only 350 (!!) surviving Jews in all of  (western?) Europe in 1351, and yet there were another 999,650 Jews living elsewhere (North Africa and the Middle East? Where else were there any significant number of Jews in 1351?).

Iberian Peninsula had the most Jews at the time I believe, and there were some significant populations in the Near East (IIRC). These were not Ashkenazi though.

In and case, that 350 number is totally absurd.

The number isn't coming from historical accounts...
