It's CGI. Likely for a movie.

(I dont agree that financial inequality is inherently problematic, but the graph is striking)

I don't see how that could possibly be much different than it shows here without oppresive redisribution policies.

Well how was it different in the 80s?

A large part of the spread is government redistribution from the poor to the rich with cheap credit, Fed actively maintaining asset values, and full-blown government bailout hand-out to stockholders like the banks and airlines.

Do you have a similar chart ending in the 80s?

Look at 1985-1995 on this chart.

Here's a chart comparing 1946-1980 to 1980-2014. Inequality is definitely growing at higher rates than the past. 1980 is seen as a turning point because of the advent of Reganomics and economic policy favoring the rich.

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/08/07/opinion/leonhardt-income-inequality.html?mtrref=www.google.com&assetType=PAYWALL

What do you see there?
A cumulative growth rate of 10-40% in all income groups from 1985 to 1995, compared to 1995-2005 that is around 250% for the 0.01% percentile and 10-40% for the rest

Talk about cherry picking... of course the top .01% is going to make the comparison look bad. It's been like that since the beginning of time.

Nope. Changed dramatically in 1980. See updated post. The 0.01% income growth was lower than lower income growth until 1980.

How much of that is related to the creation of the middle class in the 30 years post-WWII? Starting from zero is going to make the percentages look better. After the middle class was established, the growth rates normalized. (Just a thought, not based on data.)

Which policies specifically are you referring to?

After the middle class was established, the growth rates normalized. (Just a thought, not based on data.)
What makes a 6:1 discrepancy in growth rates normal? Normal is when there isn't a discrepancy, and the poor people's income improves at the same rate as rich people.
