That Twitter thread could have easily have been written by Ellsworth Toohey in The Banner.
He also conflates “detail” with “ornate”. Yeh, ornate is not popular after hundreds of years of the same old flower and leaf pattern being used again and again. In a time when you needed special handiwork to create something ornate, it was a way for the wealthy to stand out and flaunt their wealth.
More recently, ornate patterns became very simple to replicate with modern tools. A $50 ornate rug in TJ Maxx that was pumped out in the tens of thousands doesn’t exactly have much luster.
OTOH, a custom ornate piece will still stand out but to produce is prohibitively expensive for most situations unless resorting to slave labor. Regardless, if we’re doing custom, give me an intricate design inspired by the Wynwood Walls over an uninspired ornate piece.
