What was the real reasoning?

IINM there were two reasons given (actually one mainly for visiting, and another for moving there):

1. Not confident that would be allowed (halachically) to go out of EY once entering.
2. The ability to send emissaries and conduct activities in certain other countries.

It should also be noted that after the establishment of the State of Israel, the Frierdike Rebbe made an effort to be naturalized in the US (IINM the only color video of the Frierdiker Rebbe that exists, documents the ceremony).

Unfortunately I don't think enough youngsters are aware of it.  Pretty amazing how things don't change and it's as relevant and true today as it was when written (probably around 60 years ago).

Still off. IIRC correctly the Rebbe once publicly mentioned that he is older on his papers than his real age.

Keep in mind that it's based on information they received from Russian immigrants who knew that the number one rule was to lie to authorities, so pretty sure chassidim gave false information whenever questioned, and lav davka the chassidim themselves knew the correct information
