I was able to book a ticket on the way back on Dec 1 with EL AL using AA miles. The charge was 45k per ticket plus $87.32 charge to book ticket, $35 for booking over the phone even unable to book online + $52.32 fee.

Anyway to get these fees knocked down?

If you are booking with AA miles then you can only call AA to book. Why would he have called El Al.

So Dan says that if you get a credit card at http://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards then you can get 2 free one-way trips from TLV to NYC. Are any of those cards not easily converted to miles? The reason I ask is cause my wife keeps saying that if we can get points on a new card that can be sold at, say a 1.4 rate then it makes sense for us to just keep the cash. If, however, one of those cards will give you miles that are not convertible to cash then I would get that card just for the miles and tix and not feel guilty about spending cash or cash equivalent. Thanks guys

No miles are convertible to cash. You'll have to find a broker who buys.

Yes, I meant that. I know there are some cards whose points are not worthwhile for a broker to purchase. Do any of those cards fit that or are they all so valuable that brokers would give me a good cash rate for them?

if you get your points at under 1 cpp, then getting a 1.4 value gives you a 40% return.
