From an perspective outside of the FF hacking community, who thinks it was a wrong move by DL and UA?

The whole system didn't make sense in first place. The only sensible way to reward customers should be based on spending and revenue for a company.

Why in the world should an airline reward customers based on how many miles the fly? How does that get them more revenue?

They could've just reward customers based on the length of their nose. It makes the same sense as based on miles flow

Before boarding, all passengers should have to go through this exam:

That's why they give miles, not cashback.
That doesn't explain why earning should be based on miles flown. That has no rationale.

Sure it does. If the reward is per $$$ you can't get away with buying a higher fare in order to get more rewards... if it's a multiple of booking class, much harder for someone to blame you

I thought that was obvious. Otherwise there would never be a full fare ticket sold, it makes absolutely no sense.

The majority of premium travel is paid by third parties. The airlines are trying to incentives  the pax to spend more on the ticket.

I remain 100% coherent when Im drunk.

And how exactly does the miles-flown structure incentives the pax to spend more when most tickets aren't paid by the pax anyway?

Because higher fare classes earn more miles

That is still the case with the revenue structure.

This man just doesn't seem to get my point. We're going in circles.
Okay, of course you give more miles for higher fare classes. And that is exactly my point: you reward more the customers who spend more.

But back again to my first question: why in the world should they reward based on miles flown? How does it make more sense than rewarding based on size of passenger's nose?

A rare moment here but I actually agree with what Meshugener is saying here. :)
Makes sense to me. We're just so used to the way it's been.
