Are you trying to convert a 4 prong to 3 prong?

The picture we are looking at is the cable you disconnected off the old stove? The other end of the cable was a plug on it?
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

Currently have 4 wires running to the appliance, but the new appliance only uses three.

I think I need to connect to the 2 hot wires and the ground, and just cap off the neutral.

The picture we are looking at is the cable you disconnected off the old stove? The other end of the cable was a plug on it?

The picture is the house wires (running in the conduit that was previously connected to the original stovetop). It was hardwired, no plug.

I have determined that each of the red wires are 120V Hot wires. The two remaining wires, are the neutral and the ground. But I am looking for a way to determine which one is which.

Look at the old stovetop and see if one was connected to the frame.

Chances are you are keeping the neutral and capping the ground..

That would be the safest as if the stove needs 110 for anything you will need the neutral.

None was directly connected to the frame. all four were connected to wires inside the old cooktop.

Look above. The instructions only call for two hots and a ground. Relying on the neutral for the ground is NOT a good idea.

At this point I will likely just connect the two hots, and run a new ground wire to the unit from the electrical panel.

This is the item.

Thanks guys for your help.

That sounds like a major job. If the wire run to the panel directly, can't you pull on them and see which one moves?

Theres a junction box somewhere. The two leads coming off the breakers are black not red. I guess i will first hunt for the junction box.

The electrical panel itself is a huge mess. cant barely see anything in there.

The junction box might show which color is the N or G. Good Luck!

I bought an emporia home energy monitor and it needs to have 2 neutral wires put in the the neutral bus bar on my panel.  I know that neutral and grounds can share a bar, but neutrals cannot be double tapped, while grounds can (or be triple tapped on larger lugs).  I already have all the grounds doubled up (where I can reach them), and still need one more slot for the other neutral.

My two options (that I can think of) are

1. Pig tail some of the neutrals so that I can get 4 neutrals to one lug by pigtailing 2 or more together. Is this allowed?

2. Adding another ground busbar. I’d have to extend most of the grounds by either pigtailing 1:1 to the new bar, or doubling or tripling up like in the first option (if allowed).

Number 1 is the simplest for me, but I don’t want to do anything dangerous or not to code.  The panel is already a mess.

Are you sure you want to add this system to an already messy panel? It's about to get a lot messier...
