"Original wiring was two simple switches, each on had a hot wire (line)"
Did you connect both of these to each other and to a single terminal of the new switch? My concern would be if they previously were controlled by two separate circuit breakers, in which case they shouldn't be connected to each other. How could you verify that now without undoing it? Turn off all circuit breakers except the main. Then turn on one at a time while someone watches the timer. If more than one of them causes the timer to come to life, you have a problem.

Good point! The two switches were on the same breaker, so no issue.

You equate white with neutral. It's not always used that way. For example, if the first segment of cable goes from the circuit breaker panel to a ceiling light fixture and a second segment of cable goes from the ceiling light fixture to a wall switch, that second segment will have a black insulated wire that is always hot and a white insulated wire that is hot when the switch is on.

+1. I never said the wires were neutral, I called them LOAD but not everyone understood, so I said white. Plus, I specifically mwntioned that I dug out the neutral wires from in the box. Appreciate you being helpful.

Just so everyone understands you never use white for load, line, hot in a 110v circuits. We call these guys "schlocks".  :)

I have a room with no lights, only an outlet connected to a light switch.

I want to put in recessed lighting. Thinking of using these:

Designers Fountain EV407941WH27 Modern Easy Up 4 inch 2700K Warm White 91 CRI Integrated Led Recessed Light with J-Box (No Can Needed) - - Amazon.com ($21.17)

Never done this before. Anyone have any tips for me before I start cutting holes and fishing wires?

The pic looks like it has holes for NM cable and the product description does not clarify what other holes are available on the junction box. If it does not have holes for metal cable, it may not be suitable for locations that require metal cable. So if your locale does not allow NM, you should pose this question on Amazon.

This product is designed to be used with NM (Romex) cables only.

Thanks. How do I find out if Romex is allowed? I have a whole bunch of old Romex running through my basement. Can I assume it's fine?

Separate question: Should I replace all the old Romex in the basement?

Don't assume Romex is code. With that being said there is no issue with Romex.

So hypothetically if I go ahead and do it with Romex, what's the worst case scenario? (assuming I do everything correctly)

The Code Police find you and make you rip it out and fine you.  :)
IMHO in a private there would be no issue.

To the code police, if you're reading this: I'm not the guy that called you yesterday. That was a different guy.

Ok so I finally got around to looking at the wiring to try and figure out what's going on. In a nutshell: I have no idea what's going on.

I have a lightswitch that controls only one outlet, nothing else (as far as I can tell).

I pulled the switch out of the box, and found the following:

There are two Romex cables coming into the box. One has two wires (black and white) and one has three (black white and red). The two white wires are connected to each other, makes sense. The red wire is connected to the top screw on the switch. BOTH black wires are connected to the bottom screw of the switch. Huh?

My guess would be.
White = neutral
Black = hot
Red = switched

The other end of three wire Romex can be feeding another circuit.

Aha. This makes sense.

Aha. This makes sense.
Is one half of the outlet hot all the time? The other half is switched?

Just checked and it's not. Good thought though

Anyone know any licensed electricians in Flatbush?
I just got my Model 3 and would like a quote on installing a 2nd meter and 240v outlet for off peak charging
