The hardwiring came out of my smoke detector. I just reconnect both wires into that cap?

No!
How many smoke detectors you have? There should be more wires in the box. Hopefully another white and black.
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

this is a smoke detector that I was trying to change the battery to, and ended up pulling the wires out of the ceiling. So white to be capped with white and black with black? Also Can I touch the wires?

You plan on doing this on a live circuit? How did these wires become disconnected or was it always that way?
To answer your question normally w/w and b/b.

Read carefully: Yes you can touch the wires but don't do it. Shut the breaker off first then connect w>w and b>b.
I work with live circuits all the time but don't you do it!!!

thank you! I was thinking of tinkering around because I didn’t think they were live wires but I’m glad I asked here first. I’ll prob get an electrician to come down...

I am really confused how you pulled those wires out. I am wondering if they were never connected and you were running off the battery the whole time.

I have seen hard wired smoke detectors that have a green LED that stays on solid at all times. I have never see a smoke detector powered only by battery that keeps the LED on at all times (it would soon drain the battery). If others agree with me on this, the question is whether there was a steady LED on before you pulled it out. If not, it is possible it was never connected to AC power. You were asked above how many smoke detectors you have, a question you did not answer yet. The purpose of the orange wire is to connect to other smoke detectors in the house so that if this one sounds an alarm, the other(s) also do. Someone could conceivably have hooked up that feature but not the AC power.

That brings up an interesting question. Would that feature work without AC power?

I have a fan+light in the hallway at the top of my stairs, with pull chains on the unit and a 3 way switch at the top and bottom of the stairs. I'm replacing the unit and would love to have it wired up so that the light remains on the 3 way switch setup and the fan gets wired up to a second wall switch at the top of the stairs (multi speed fan control). My understanding is that many fans on the market can be set up like this (without the pull chains), but this would likely involve running extra wire from the unit to the upstairs switch. Is this a big deal? My general contractor is trying to convince me not to bother.

Shouldn't be a big deal. Depends what you have in the wall...

you can use wireless switches which means you don't need to pull wires

But then can I have separate wall control for the fan and the light? The whole point is to separate them so that the light can still be controlled from both upstairs and downstairs, while the fan can be controlled separately just upstairs.

To separate them so that you have individual control of each from the wall switch, you would need an additional wire. If you are replacing the fan/light with a wireless model (or even if you put an aftermarket wireless receiver inside your existing fan/light), you really don't need any wall switch and could leave power to the ceiling box on and your remote would individually control the fan and light. You would just need to obtain a second remote so that you have control from both floors.

How close is the light switch to the fan? Are the wires in conduit?

Practically right under it. I doubt it's in conduit, but haven't looked.
