Bike deal request and advice
« on: June 08, 2014, 08:37:40 AM »
I'm looking to buy a 2nd bike (going to the country this year and it's too much to schlep my bike back and forth every weekend). Looking to spend $600, give or take $200-300. I think I want a racing bike (my current bike is a hybrid-Giant Roam 3-better for NY streets).
1) Do any experts out there know if a racing bike is OK for biking to/from/in the mountains (basically streets and paths I think)?
2)Anybody know of any good deals? I know the past few years South Shore Bicycle (Woodmere) had 25% off coupons but I don't get that coupon book anymore (actually I don't recall which of the many local papers and coupon books it was advertised in. Maybe online.). Anybody know if they have a deal this year and if yes, where I could find the coupon? If not, any other good bike stores (my past two bikes I got from Oceanside Cycle who is excellent but very expensive) that have good deals?
TIA

Not sure if your interested but there's  someone called "The bike man" in Monsey, I know he used to sell new bikes not sure if he still does... He may have a second hand bike that you can buy as well. You can call 845-425-6071 and leave a message on his machine and someone calls you back. I think he also comes to the mountains once a week during the summer. Let me know what happens...

Was thinking somebody more local (5towns, Brooklyn, Queens area) but maybe I'll give him a call. Thanks

Since you mentioned South Shore, I want to share the following: About fifteen years ago, I purchased a bike from them for about $400. A friend of mine liked what I bought and shopped around for it. He then bought the identical model at a shop in Brooklyn (possibly on Coney Island Ave) for about half what I paid.

I def keep that in mind. But one thing about buying a quality bike is service. First of all it has to be put together properly. Also, some places will give a maintenance package. For example, the reason why I bought my past two bikes from Oceanside Cycle, which is a little more expensive than other local stores is because they offer lifetime tuneups with every purchase. A tuneup costs about $75. I get about 2 or 3 of them a year.

So did anybody here ever bike from the Catskills to 5towns? Any advice? Which route? Is everything paved? I'm thinking of doing lakewood instead (would probably do it in two days). Anybody do that route? Looking for any advice out there. Is there maybe a website for this type of thing? The longest route I've ever done was 5towns to lakewood but that is really simple and clear cut.

I plan to do that someday, but I probably don't have as much stamina, so here's my planned route: NY Route 42 South to Port Jervis, railroad from Port Jervis to Cedarhurst, with transfers at Secaucus, NY Penn Station and Jamaica. Total fare is $29.75. Soon after I bought the aforementioned bike, I bought a $5 permit to allow me to bring it on both Metro North and LIRR.

Anyone have a bike for sale? Preferably under 200. Only need for local flat road riding. Maybe some park riding.

Don't be surprised; Costco is not usually big on selection.

go get one from a reputable bike store. It's worth the extra money.
