He only broke for second once he saw the catcher's back was turned, paying attention to the home plate umps call on the play at the plate. Puig is actually pretty darn fast.

The question is why didn't he tag and at least start toward second as soon as the ball was caught. Then once he saw the ball was headed toward the plate he could've gone full speed to second. There's no guarantee he makes it, as the Gomes obviously makes a much quicker throw to second in that scenario, but this is Puig we're talking about here, more likely is he just had one of his base-running brain freeze moments.

You said you could've walked and made it safe to second. Though you were obviously joking, I'm trying to tell you that not every MLB player would even have made it running. A lot of slower runners would stay at first.

the guy on first should be tagging up and running the same time as the guy on third. the slowest runner in league will make it standing up. my guess is he had to go back to tag up.

You absolutely should not be tagging from first immediately on a pop-up to shallow left. What if the LF concedes he's not getting the runner at home and focuses on getting you instead? You can take a big lead, one that will allow you to get back to first easily if the throw goes to first or second, but you absolutely should not be going full steam, head down to second.

I'm assuming that the runner only took off after the outfielder threw to home plate.
I think the runner was Puig - one of the most athletic human beings alive.

He definitely did not start running on the throw to home. Gomes had his back to field, holding up the ball for the home plate umpire. That must have been when Puig went. There's no way Puig would even have needed to slide if he tagged and ran right away (or even tagged, took a lead, and ran when the ball was on its way), given the fact that Gomes wasn't up and throwing immediately.
