So many.

QF,SQ,EK just to name a few.

Trying for as direct as possible, and trying new options.  That rules out EK, EY, CX, QR and probably some others.  I guess KE and SQ are possibilities, but trying to maximize time on the ground.

You can't have it all. If you truly want to maximize, you're flying QF F, AA F/J, or VA J.
2015: 116K bkd | 1.6M brnd | F: OZ,NH,AA,EK | J: UA,CA,TK,DL,TN,AF,VA | LIH,NRT,ROR,PEK,CNS,BOB,MEL,TLV & Pacific Hopper

Figures, thanks.  My buddy is in love for some reason with the new VA 773 but I'm not in love.  I guess I'll just see what opens and nab anything that's under 30hrs of flight time.

New VA 773 looks gorgeous to me, too. But even so, my favorite ever biz class is VA 773 (old):

Hard Product (Business Class)(from what I can remember):

  •    VA J on 777 in Seat 5A/5C

If I were in your shoes and wanted to maximize my time, I'd do one of the following:

CX F/J JFK-HKG-AKL
KE F/F JFK-ICN-AKL
DL/VA J JFK-LAX-SYD-AKL
AA F/J JFK-LAX-AKL or AA F/F JFK-LAX-SYD-AKL; or
UA J/J EWR-SFO-AKL

Appreciate the input, AJK.  Plenty of options, I'll just see what's available when the schedule is released.  Any J/F products on that route to shy away from?

Not saying they would be my first choice but from the many first hand reports I've gotten, they aren't as bad as their reputation is (for J at least). Especially when you take into account how good of a deal you can get on some of their routes.

You're right. All I'm saying is that I wouldn't fly out of the way for their F, let alone their J. CX and it's ilk are different.

Agreed. Just wanted to make the separate point that since their refresh they are a decent option if you have to go to China, key word being if you have to go, not if you are looking for a once in a life time trip.

What's wrong with CZ? Their hard product in J looks good.
Do you have the same qualms with MU?
I'm referring specifically to the 77W

The one with the curtain that partitions those two seats off by themselves effectively giving you more privacy that  almost any R/F seat out there.

The hard product is pretty decent but their service is way behind other carriers like CX, SQ. MU also has very decent hard products but they have the same issue with their service.

A lot of people have very negative opinions of both MU and CZ due to their history of being pretty bad, but since they both refreshed their cabins they have come a long way.

UA.com has CA bookable in F on a 777, but SeatGuru claims that plane only has J. Any ideas?

Seatguru doesn't always get the version of an aircraft right. It probably says there are multiple versions of that plane.

Not in this case; it only lists type of 777.

That's weird bc SG definitely lists several 777s of that type, both 2 class and 3
