Why are you assuming 2 class?

Business class on CX 77W. 2 adults, 2 kids.
Take a row across or 2 rows of 2 in the middle?

If I book an award flight in lie-flat seats and the aircraft is subsequently changed to one with recliner seats, can I have the flights changed?

Probably former. Parents can have a look at the kids without getting up every time.

Generally no.

I would recommend across, you won't be able to see them if they are in front of you or behind without getting up

TG J into MEL is real cr@p.

One of the 2 daily flights is on the 77W with their new business class that has flat bed seats.

What to choose?

CX J HKG-JFK direct

Or

CX F/LH F connecting in FRA

Note:
Done LH F twice in the past, and by the time of travel I'll also have CX F crossed off the bucket list.

So first time excitement is not into consideration. Just a convenience question.

CX F direct convenience wise and price wise.

Please read again, no CX F direct available.

Either CX J direct or CX F>LH F.

I checked out that site before. And I just got even more confused... They have an interesting seat map.
