I am willing to bet that the last "missing" Malaysian Airlines plane was shot down as well... and covered up very nicely.

The odds of that are next to zero, which rise slightly if it was over the ocean.

Is it just me or should all airlines be avoiding this airspace for the foreseeable future?

From this map, seems like they weren't supposed to be flying there in first place

Don't be so naive. How often to large aircraft "vanish"?

Plane goes completely off the radar... shot down is the most probably answer.

Which begs the question, why was the transponder off during its flight over most of Ukraine?

How does that make sense? It doesn't even look like the plane was shot down anywhere near the areas of conflict shown on that map.

Who says the transponder was off? I thought transponders are checked in periodically

I don't think you are reading the map correctly

Small box = area of crash.

Big box = area of conflict.

+1.. don't see that anywhere. And, in fact, flightaware uses transponder signals and it tracked it right until it being shot down.
