Dolchetto can close half the restaurant. Not sure how many people they can fit but worth the call. Also I think 306 bbq has a separate room as well.

Sadly, it is often tragedy that is a catalyst for change.

How many changes were made to hospitals because of tragic deaths? How many stop signs added? How many CPR courses were begun?

But there is a dark side to this.

I’ll never forget when a neighbor accidentally left her baby in a hot vehicle. As this baby was being worked on, there were posters going up and texts going around “CHECK YOUR CARS”.

This mother and her family were dying a million deaths seeing those signs.

Oh and that’s without the blog posts and comments on news sites.

I believe that at the time of tragedy, people actually have a really good awareness. Like that day we all checked our cars ten times…just in case.

Two weeks or a month later, when our memories move on is a great time for awareness because it doesn’t link itself immediately to a tragic circumstance.

Today, I was reminded of that as I watched news sites blow up with “reminders” and my heart sank. This is not the time to remind anyone about reflectors or sidewalks. It is a time to simply hurt for loss of life. Be there in spirit with a bereaved family. Respect the space.

Oh and respect that facts and assumptions are not one and the same.

The other day, I was scrolling through a site to see a notification of a death of a child along with a reminder of the fact that every parent should know the Heimlich Manuever. Really?!

Don’t champion a cause on the pain of another.

Give family and community space to grieve, to feel and a few weeks later there can be a movement for those CPR and first aid classes.

And if you are a business: never ever use a tragedy to make a case. I’ll never forget seeing an ad the week after a fire that claimed several lives “buy a smoke detector” from an appliance store. No. Just no.

I know I may not be coherent but my heart is hurting so much right now. We need to make change together.

And tell me your thoughts…tonight…tomorrow or whenever you see this.

Yup. It's a psychological defense mechanism to convince ourselves that as long as we do something different, we'll be safe. Same thing as otherwise normal nice people asking the family by a shiva if the 40 year man who had a fatal heart attack was a smoker. We want to subconsciously render ourselves immune to the same fate, because we can't contemplate our human frailty.
