Current purchases are back-ordered at least a month. Some collectors/people are willing to pay premiums to get them earlier.
Not this specific one, but other specialty coins released by the mint have limited amounts made.
Also, each "household" can only order 5 coins.

An initial inventory of 40,000 coins will be available for sale on August 5 through various sales channels. The United States Mint will evaluate sales activity during the first week and make adjustments to its production schedule accordingly.

This is not a limited production coin. Why would I pay more than the value of the gold it contains? In a year or two that's how it will be valued.

A. this is an initial production of 40,000 which is considered a first strike. subsequent strikes are not as sharp since the dies get worn out.
B. the mint is not decided if they will strike more coins of the kennedy gold dollar if they decide next week not to continue producing them they will become very valuable otherwise you may be correct.
