Camping Master Thread
« on: August 06, 2014, 10:07:16 AM »
I have been looking around DDF and I don't believe there is any type of master thread dedicated to camping tips and ideas, so I thought I would start it. Where are some nice places to go camping? What are some tips and ideas when camping with kids?

Nobody here goes camping? You can even use campgrounds to get cash back from Barclays :)

My family used to go camping in various places up the coast during the summer when I was a kid.
But maybe most people on here feel that you couldn't pay them enough to sleep on the floor of a tent when they can stay in a nice hotel instead! (That's certainly how I feel)

There is a camping Gemach  in Baltimore.
I've gone camping at Cunningham Falls State Park in Thrumont MD.

I personally haven't gone with a kid that young, but I know people who do and their kids love it.

It's not that I wouldn't do it, it just never worked out for me...

Bring paper plates and plastic silverware and garbage bags.
Dont plan on doing any real cooking over a campfire.
Bring a few plastic tablecloths to put on the ground under your tent.
If you are 3 people, get a tent that "sleeps 4" minimum.

Sure, that can work. You can also buy potatoes, wrap them in silver foil, and toss them into the fire. But for most anything else (even plain hot water) it's much easier to use sterno.

A mat or air mattress is certainly a good idea to get a comfortable night's sleep. The suggestion I was making though was to put something underneath the floor of the tent (to prevent contact with the ground). You'll appreciate why when it comes time to take the tent down.

Ever try wrapping corn in aluminum foil (in the husk)

I never did corn, but now that you mention it sounds like a good idea. Let me know how it works out.
