Fantastic trip idea - Virginia
« on: August 07, 2014, 09:36:19 AM »
For those looking for an affordable trip idea from NYC ( or south of NYC).  The four points in Richmond va is a starwoods category one hotel.  (You can try to get upgraded to their two bedroom suite!).  We stayed last night and it was perfectly fine.

TODAY only August 7 you can buy $30 tix to kings dominion that is 25 minutes away. Those tickets are good for any day from August 9 to  August 24.   You are also 45 minutes from Busch gardens and all the Williamsburg attractions.

Richmond's kinda boring. Norfolk/Virginia Beach/Chesapeake is much better IMO.

I'm sure there's a better thread.
I went there more than 10 years ago.
Richmond had a minyan.  Probably still has.  Maybe even kosher food.
There's
-- Colonial Williamsburg - A colonial reenactment - 2 days, if you do the shows and stop by all the houses and even the slave quarters.  My family enjoyed.
--Jamestown Settlement That has all reproductions, so you can touch.  Indian settlement, British fort, ship that they traveled on. Action-packed half day. We enjoyed.
--Yorktown - Revolutionary war battlefield.  We didn't get there, but my husband pined for it.
--Busch Gardens Amusement Park

The weather is WARMer than NY/NJ.  As one of the guides said, "This is why we do things slower in Virginia."

Virginia Beach has a wonderful ropes course and a massive go-kart place, and the boat tours of the naval yard in Norfolk are absolutely incredible (way cooler than it sounds).

+1. Ropes course was great.
All naval and air sights are much more interesting than colonial stuff IMO. Pretty cool to be driving down the highway and your car starts shaking from a couple fighter jets flying over.
Then there's all the water sports. Plus, Virginia Beach has nice Dave and Busters and other arcades places. Norfolk has a quasi amusement park by the water IIRC. Just in general, the area caters more to vacationers.
And the Jewish community actually exists over there, unlike Richmond.
The Four Points on the water used to be 4k SPG :( was a great value. I think it's 17.5k now. And while you're there, get a glass of Devil's Backbone Vienna Lager during happy hour. You won't regret it.

Can a Mod rename this "Virginia Master Thread"?

There aren't restaurants but there was some food at the Harris Teeter's kosher section.

In case anybody else is wondering I reached out to Chabad in Williamsburg VA and they have confirmed Minyan for Tuesday and Wednesday Chal Hamoed and are working on the rest.
