XE trading is a good forex option, you can initiate a trade that'll draw GBP from a UK account and land the funds in a US account as USD.

Contact them and ask, I know their rates were great and no commission when I used them.

If your bank doesn't charge a FOREX fee than just taking out of an ATM will give you the market rates.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Why do you need it before you travel as opposed to getting GBP in the airport when you arrive?

Some banks will let you temporarily raise those limits.
Call and see what your limits are.

(I realize not all people are crazy and have 12 bank accounts like me ;))

Guys, I'm afraid to say, that's not how one goes about changing decent amounts of money.

I have experience with this.

You usually don't quote, so I have no idea who you're responding to. What is not the way to exchange money (in your opinion)?

I use the simple mobile site, which has no quote (its way faster and lighter, then the other).

All the ways mentioned above aren't good.

Finding a yiddele that has his little underground exchange place, as they have by far the best rate.

As a general advice to know whether a place has a good exchange rate or not.
Ask them whether they have fees, and you the ask the for the buying and selling price (eg $ to £ and £ to $), not tellong them what you intend on doing.

If the numbers are very close to each other, you have a good rate.

I've had a HSBC savings account set up and have used them all over the world to pull out money. They usually give good exchange rates. They have HSBC banks in London and I know for example in other countries like France and Australia. You just pull out money like you usually do with no fees and they usually give a good exchange rate. You can also try ukforex.co.uk I have never tried the UK one but the australian one gives good rates, much better than xe.

I know ozforex.com.au for example gives 2 free trades before they charge any fees however the bank could charge incoming wire fees.
