Same idea but totally different. Switzerland is more expensive but much nicer.

Thanks. Were you also at Kitzsteinhorn?
It goes back more than 4 years, I have to check my notes.
I was by the alpine coaster for sure.

Looking to do a two day trip next week to Munich/Salzburg. What are the must sees in those two cities? Would there be time for a visit to the mountains? (not for skiing). How accessible are the mountains via public transit from Salzburg?

Which month are you planning to go? If you want to see the alps i would suggest going to Kitzsteinhorn. Regarding public transportation; Depends to where you wanna go. in general the public transportation is not so good or may aquire many transfers which equals waste of time.

Thanks. I would be going next week. That's a shame to hear about public transit, being that you a US license alone does not allow you to drive there

Negative. USA license can be used almost everywhere, including MUC. Only driver license from certain countries (ie. Israel) require  to have an international license.

MUC yes, but not in Austria. They require an international drivers license AFAIK

Who requires? The rental agencies or the police?

US licenses are allowed - if not living in Austria - for 12 months after coming in if over the age of 18.

I know. I've rented cars and been stopped by police for speeding and they didn't say anything about my license.

I wanted to know where he was taking it from.

I don't know. But it is incorrect. More then very familiar with the OAMTC in Austria after not just living there but also having a mother that lives there and that only has a US license.

"A U.S. driver's license alone is not sufficient to drive in Austria. The U.S. driver's license must be accompanied by an international driver's permit (obtainable in the U.S. from AAA) or by an official translation of the U.S. driver's license, which can be obtained at one of the Austrian automobile clubs (ÖAMTC or ARBÖ). This arrangement is only acceptable for the first six months of driving in Austria, after which all drivers must obtain an Austrian license."

Per the website of the US Embassy

That vs everyone telling you from firsthand experience that it's not a problem.

Finally cleared it out.

* An international driver's license is required if your national driver's license is not in Roman script. An IDL is also mandatory, by law,

for non-European Union renters except for customers from the following countries: Argentina, Australia,Bolivia, Brazil, Canada,

Colombia, Israel, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa & USA. If stopped by the police while driving without an IDL you might incur a

fine & the vehicle may be confiscated for 3 months. In this case, Hertz reserves the right to charge you the non-waivable excess

amount.

The trip was a year ago, so this is just what I remember off-hand. If you have any other questions, please ask. Also, Lonely Planet's Austria book was amazing - there is a lot to do in the area if you are willing to drive a bit. There are ice caves (not doable with little kids), lookouts, Swarovski headquarters, etc. Always remember  - GIYF  :D

did you visit the Swarovski factory? it looks incredible. worth a 2 hour drive? it's just my husband and me
My greatest achievement? I am fluent in FRIENDS quotes

We did not. I remember looking into it and it looked fantastic but don't remember why we decided not to go
