There are challenges that come with poverty and struggle, and there are challenges that come with fame and fortune.

The world envies the latter type, but it appears that once you have it all, there is really nothing left to look forward to.

Either way, he was a genuinely good hearted man.
People that are poor think they're unhappy because they're poor.
It's a complete fallacy, but you're right, it does still give them hope that if they strike it rich they'll be happy.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

He may have had issues unrelated to fame or fortune.
Who knows.

And I didn't start the post so we could sit here judging the guy and listing all his bad qualities.

He seemed like a nice quality guy to me.  And I loved so many of his films.  And he was outrageously funny.   There are few actors with such talent these days in Hollywood.

It's sad that he's gone and even more tragic that he killed himself.

I am echoing everyone here.  Bichlal, these actors/actresses mean nill to me.  They come and go every day. To/from rehab, divorce, and life.

But when I saw this headline I felt sad. Really.

Could we possibly get some links to some of his best stuff?

Can't beleive that there is seriously a post about some guy that commited suicide, on DDF

This is a problematic - and unfortunately very prevalent - attitude.

Suicide is a tragedy. In this case, it seems to have been caused by a debilitating illness - depression.

All too often, especially in the broader "frum" community, suicide, depression and other mental illnesses are hushed and stigmatized. A depressed person is not "crazy" or "not normal." Depression is an illness, just like the flu. It can be treated, and we should, as a community, be more supportive and helpful towards those suffering from it. While I fully understand that when a frum person commits suicide we wouldn't want to put the family in the spotlight, and we should allow them to grieve in peace and privacy, a celebrity is a tragic opportunity to highlight an issue which plagues so many.

Whatever your views on his vulgarity, Robin Williams was an absolutely hilarious person, and yet even he suffered from this debilitating, and clearly deadly sickness.

Depression is not "being sad" or feeling down, it is much worse and affects so many. Seeking therapeutic or psychiatric help should not be something which distances someone from the community - it should be strongly encouraged.

For anyone who needs help - here is a great place to start: www.reliefhelp.org

Here is a quick video to help understand a bit more about depression:

+1

Most people don't know what depression is. People imagine depression as being "sad" or "angry" or "upset". For this reason, they can't sympathize with a rich celebrity that has depression, because in the minds of most people, what does he have to be depressed about? He can have as many homes as he wants, drive any car he wants, have as many women as he wants, have as many yachts as he wants etc... so why would he be sad?

i see the crowd here has aged themselves. i first saw him in a very short part on FRIENDS. since then i "saw" him in Aladdin and Good Will Hunting. great actor, fantastic comedian.
he happens to have been an atheist but since when does religion matter? other than the fact that he's not jewish- i really don't care who he prayed to at night.
i LOVE Pen & Teller. would i skip their show because Teller is atheist?? absolutely not.
am i not supposed to grieve because of religious views?
My greatest achievement? I am fluent in FRIENDS quotes
