Was it morning or afternoon departure? I've had this happen a few times on routes with multiple frequencies, the last flights of the day, don't show.

Booked this rather than Etihad to AUH-SYD in first, as passenger is hoping CX opens up in J for TLV-HKG and wants to avoid redeposit and expedite fees that would be incurred switching to that. Also booked RJ between AMM-AUH rather than Etihad, so as to spend more of the layover in AUH rather than AMM.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Did you check how many seats are even unsold on that flight? It's very unlikely that it'll open up so you basically just added a huge amount of time, an extra leg and gave up one of the  best business class products on the off chance that the flight will open. Doesn't seem worth it to me....

It is not you or I traveling. Different people have different preferences, and the potential for flying lie-flat with less connections is very important to the passenger here.

I would have probably booked Etihad first, as I find it to be a much better value, but I am not the person travelling (or paying the fees if needed).

As for the CX flight from TLV, I don't have access to a GDS, but on their website it looks decent, allowing a booking for 6 passengers (the maximum they allow on their website) for what looks like discounted business fare:

I hear, I just think you'll end up with an extra unnecessary connection, if it were me, I would have taken the the more direct routing that's available now instead of doing a more circuitous routing on the chance that a different seat will open and you'll save some money on changing to it. It just doesn't seem worth it on the off chance that you'll save a few hundred dollars and get a slightly better routing. But to each their own

I am with you, and suggested the same to the person traveling who made the choice to book this way. Using Etihad for AUH-SYD would still end up with 4 flight segments, but a lot less layover time, and a more favorable route to Australia IMHO, but as we all agree, to each their own (the person traveling was even questioning me as to why I seem so keen on booking Etihad 1st as opposed to other options. Besides for the above explanation, I also went on Etihad.com and quoted that trip as revenue, which is $8,000 for a trip that costs 100,000 AA miles and ~$90 in taxes and fees).

That's what I love about Etihad F, the point to revenue ratio is one of the highest you can get even after the deval

But for some people that is meaningless, as it's all theoretical because they would never pay for the Etihad F. All they care about is getting from point A to point B in a way that will allow good rest.

True, I'm just saying in general.

True, I'm just saying in general.
In this specific case, I think that booking the Etihad F was also a much better connection as far as layovers are concerned, but the passenger is really keeping hopes high for CX J to open up, which would make it the best possible connection (down to 2 flight segments all in lie-flat).
