How many people can you stuff into one hotel room?
« on: August 17, 2014, 11:28:48 PM »
Most hotels state a 2/3/4 maximum people per room(even suites). What happens if I show up with 5 kids? Will they give me extra linen so we can place people on floors, couches etc.? Will they not allow me to check in? Any strategies to maximize the space?

I'm sure the veterans here have plenty experience with this. TIA.

Email the general manager of the hotel first, explain the situation, explain that you have top elite status with the hotel and really politely ask him for an affordable option. IME, Hyatt 100% success, IHG 30% success, Langham 110% success, small hotels 70% success.

Thanks. I don't have elite status with anyone yet, but i like your route nonetheless.

What are you alluding to as a success? Allowing extra people in the room? Or something beyond that?

The reason is because of  a fire hazard do I don't think there is flexibility on that,
I personally checked in with 2 then brought the rest later.

Has anyone checked in and then brought in 2 extra people in Europe? I was reading through tripadvisor reviews and people have said they call the cops. I'm not sure how they would actually know though. Two people check in and the rest follow later. Why would it be an issue?

I've been told that add'l cots/rollaway beds are not permitted due to fire hazard and/or room occupancy limits. Even in suites.

What about sharing beds/sleeping on the couch if there is one? We're not picky...

I wouldn't recommend telling them as there's no way they would let as it's a fire Hazard, I would leave my kids in the car for check in and not make it obvious that we're all sleeping in the same room. No James Bond stuff necessary just don't stick it in their faces. Once you get to the room you can call for more linen, again I wouldn't ask for five sets at once. Or you can try looking for the linen closet there's usually one on every floor and they're are very often unlocked.

Should be fine. Is it a big or small hotel? If its big then its really no issue, if its small enough that you must walk right in front of the check-in desk and the lobby is always empty and they remember Everyone then you have a greater chance if them making problems.

Would be SPG hotels in Spain, Italy, and Switzerland. Seems like the consensus is to keep a low profile and I'll be fine. Should I risk asking for a rollaway or that will raise red flags?

You can legitimately put 5 people in a room try it on SPG.com. That said, some of the suggestions here make me want to post in the ethics thread :)
