Thanking the dedicated DDF users

As a new user of the Forums, i ask many beginner questions and many DDF users patiently and kindly help out. I assume is that many DDF users have alerts when something is posted - so here goes my question is it proper to post thanks when someone helps me out or better not, and avoid that extra alert/post?
just looking for proper protocol?

If you don't want to clog the forum with useless posts you can pm instead but people will probably find getting +1 pms more annoying than useless posts...
