Water in my gas at Exxon - Need help getting $$$ back

So a few weeks ago I filled up my car with an empty tank at Exxon on Route 4 E in NJ, to make a long story short, my car would turn on later in the day and had to get it towed to dealership. They told me there was water in the gas and had to drain the tank and refill it. Bottom line the dealership charged me $400 and I was out of a car for several days and needed to rent one adding costing me another $200. I got a statement and a sample of the gas from the dealership stating the issue.

I have reached out to Exxon and got the run around from them when trying to reimbursed for my expenses, telling them I need to call the wholesaler.

Has anyone had a similar experience or have any ideas as the best way to get Exxon to cover my costs+

I remember a similar thing happened with a BP in the 5 towns a bunch of years ago, but I think that was contaminated gas. I don't remember what happened though.

How can you prove that it's from their gas?

Even if you have a receipt, why can't they just say it's from a different station?

I filled up tank fully from their station receipt proves as such and car was towed the next morning with a full tank

But how can you prove that the gas was the reason for the car's failure?

I hope you can, I am just curious how this goes about.

How else do u get a tax write-off?

Try contacting the NJ Dept of Weights and Measures. Perhaps they will go test the station which could prove your theory.

An alternate possibility is that your gas tank had condensation in it and the gas was fine.

The honda dealership told me a few cars came in with the same problem and they all filled up at the same station

This Honda place seems to be doing quite well for itself recently with all these 400 dollar repairs. Slow sales month maybe?

The only reason I went to them was because I thought there was something wrong with the car and it would be covered under warranty
