Hit someones car using a rental car - advice needed
« on: August 22, 2014, 12:02:36 PM »
I hit someones front driver door (bent a little) while on vacation using a avis car rented with an amex gold card.

I have my own (allstate) liability insurance that I signed up for just before the trip and this was my first accident.

Should I:

 1) Pay out of pocket

  2) Use my allstate and face premium rise

  3) Somehow get avis to pay ( I think they need to have minimum liability insurance ) Would that affect my premiums anyhow?

Thanks!

How much will out of pocket be?

What type of guy did you hit? Was there someone in the car at the time? (Certain groups are known to get whiplash, back problems, etc. and are lawsuit happy)

Let Avis or amex pay

Which Amex card covers liability?
And good luck getting avis to pay for it.

Try for Avis to pay.  Amex is a waste of time, since they will only cover after making a claim to allstate

United card only covers the car that is being rented.
The car that the renter hit is not covered by the United card.

Same goes for any other credit card that covers insurance.

The reason one would use the United card is for primary insurance on the rental car, so that you can avoid going to your personal insurance for your rental.

A couple other cards give primary too
Always use an Amex, you'll thank me one day.

@lou Bob

If a person hits another car (like the OP) which insurance would cover that vehicle? Your personal car insurance or something through the rental company?

Whats gono happen is, Avis will go to your insurance and file a claim, if your insurance would not cover you, than Avis will cover you up to the state minimums, which is 15000/25000.

If you don't pay extra for liability,  them  your own insurance would cover.
Avis liability would cover if you don't have your own insurance,  but they can (and do) charge a deductible (I believe anywhere from $1k-3k)

Try for Avis to pay.  Amex is a waste of time, since they will only cover after making a claim to allstate
so after making a claim with his own insurance will Amex pay? I thought the CC has nothing to do with liability?

Estimate came in: They want $1440 for the door. + 5 days rental while they fix it.
It looks like I should just let my insurance pay for it as it is my first accident, and hopefully allstate wont raise my rates.

my deductible is $200.

The question is, I just was added on to my allstate plan, and can cancel my plan for the next 30 days retroactively. Perhaps I should do that and let avis pay for it with the minimum state required liability they provide, the benefit being that I would not have the accident on my file. Or perhaps the deductible from avis will be very high, and maybe they'll require a police report which I don't have. Anyone have some insight?
