You cant. For Small claims they have to have a place of biz in NYC (or NYS, I forget)

Gah, there goes that idea. Funny that you post now, I was just reading about this.

Thanks for your help.

I just called to cancel my amex plat, and they refused to give me a full refund, only prorate it. Should i try calling again and see if someone else would give me a full refund? Is this prorate thingy set in stone or is it a YMMV? I have had this card opened since the begining of december

It's YMMV.  Even if they refuse after a few tries the prorating shouldn't be too bad at all, probably under $75.

Yep, 75 dollars for 50,000 miles isn't too shabby :) Thanks Dan

Update: just spoke to another rep who was more than willing to give me the full refund :)
However, he recommended that i open the zync card so my credit report wont show a cancelled card, and the 200 points i have in my amex MR account wont be lost. I declined

Well done!  No reason to get the Zync card from him.  You can sign up on your own for 10K points.

Thats exactly what i figured! The question was: is gaining 10,000 opening bonus points worth 1) the hit my credit will take from closing down my plat. card 2)the hard pull used when applying for the zync.
In the end i was in a hurry so i chose not to open up the zync with the rep on the phone. Hope that decision wont bite me later!

If your plat. doesn't have a revolving credit line, why would your credit take a hit?

I was always under the impression that closing a card (regardless of credit line) Damages credit. I guess i'm wrong

Even a canceled card actually stays on your report for years.

but if there's no credit line (charge card), does that have a bad effect on your score?
In order to understand recursion, you first need to understand recursion.

I'm suggesting it doesn't. Anyone disagree?

One of they ways FICO scores your report is the average age of your credit accounts. So if you have an account from 10 years ago and then a bunch of other accounts that had a life of 1-2 years, it shortens the average age of your credit accounts. This is my understanding.

Show me someone whose first card is an Amex charge card...

I was really referring to those playing the miles game.

The charge card does not have to be first. If you have a BoA card for example opened 10 years ago, and another 8 (like Amex plat) cards with a 1-2 year life span, it shortens the average age of your credit accounts.

are you sure that they calculate closed accounts in the average age of accounts??
