try downgrading to gold/green (like 1/4 the price)

i would not use 45k on the annual fee. Those points are worth way more than that...

True, but just transfer the points to an airline and you'll forfeit nothing.

ANA, Air Canada, and Continental are all good options IMHO depending on what you normally redeem for.

can they legally take away the points if you challenge them on it? (assuming you have a different charge card to keep your mr account active)    does it say anywhere in the t&c's that the account needs to be open a min amount of time to keep the bonus??

i'm assuming you don't have a gold/green/blue card, right?
that's why they said that.
open one of those within 30 days of closing plat (or before you close) and the points will stay.

But consider that even the points stay for 30 days but to make a transfer to a us based airline u will not be able to pay the transfer fee with your card only with miles ( and that's bad )if u not planning to open another amex card

Won't you be able to pay it with a different Amex (even non-charge) if you have one?

i was going to transfer to continental as i already have a onepass account, but was a bit worried about the merge with united that it might effect the miles. does that not bother you?

I closed my plat the day after the points posted. I got a $450 refund and the points stayed in my MR account linked to my premier rewards gold card. Just call back and speak to a different agent you shouldnt have a problem.

your miles with continental are 100% safe. when the merge completes they'll become united miles.

Nothing to worry about it that regard.

My bro-in-law got approved for the Amex Plat, spent $1000 and paid it plus the $450 annual fee.  He then got FR'ed and shut down (he got his 50K MR points so he's ok with that).  But they are refusing to refund his $450, saying since they cancelled his a/c they aren't required to.

Any advice?

Thanx.
