Please tell me you didn't give any personal info over the phone. Find a branch & ask them if there's anything open in your name or ss#.

Got a frantic call from an older lady I know.
She got a call that a car registered to her name was in an accident near the Mexico border etc, and asked her to verify her SS# number, which she then gave them. When they asked her to go the bank to wire them funds so she does not get arrested, she realized she was being scammed and hung up.

I immediately had her put on her freeze on her credit files and told her to carefully monitor bank statements and the like. Is there anything else I should advise her to do?

TIA.

Got an e-mail from Credit Karma alerting me to a new inquiry from Verizon Wireless-NY yesterday.
I did not request nor authorize that inquiry- positive. Should I be concerned about ID theft?? It's only showing on Equifax (no contact # listed), I disputed it there earlier today. Not sure; should I do anything else and/or be overly concerned about ID theft?? TIA

So...called Verizon, got bounced around from one to next, disconnected twice. And in between, noone knew from left to right, didn't really know where to direct me. Got nowhere. She did take my SS# and said it did not show up at all, and if an inquiry was made using my social it would've come up. She was saying maybe it's from an old charged off acct, I don't think I ever had a VZW acct on my name, and if I did, it was YEARS ago. So what do I make of that??

Thanks. I'm not a big user of Twitter but I'm doing just that right now. Fast response, that's for sure  ;) See if they can help.

Whoever created the thread must be Israeli since in Hebrew it would be the way it is here ;)

Thank you all. I got alot of runaround from VZW (bounced around, disconnected, clueless reps....), they claim s/o probably put their SS# incorrectly blah blah, they wouldn't confirm if an acct was subsequently opened under a different SS#
I put a fraud alert on my credit file to be safe. Didn't wanna go as far as a freeze/lock for now. I feel it will be a huge inconvenience, maybe I'm mistaken though?

You are. A freeze can be removed anytime with the PIN, and the inconvenience is a small price to pay if someone is indeed using your personal info.

I guess you're probably right (although a fraud alert is not insignificant either), I'll probably just put the freeze on.
Question is- you leave a freeze on forever?? I mean if s/o potentially has my info,  why would I remove the freeze in a year, in two years?? What changes from now to then?

You can remove it temporarily before applying for something. That's what i do, my Experian report is always frozen.

I know that. Just curious - why only your Experian?

It's mostly to prevent hard pulls, not for ID theft, and EX is the one i care the most about.
