Why is today different than the olden days ? People went through the worst things in those days too. Probably worse

He was talking as opposed to suicide that is referred to in a gemara - where people commit suicide to show Hashem that they can also be in control of life/death. He said that doesn't happen today.

That is the accepted Halacha today. In Japan where they commit suicide Beshita - not from depression, ain lo chelek leolam haba.
Someone that commits bec. of depression is considerd an "o'nes" and gets a levaya etc.

BTW, the Gesher HaChaim writes that there is no mekor for המאבד עצמו לדעת אין לו חלק לעוה"ב

Why am I angry? I happen to be a personal friend of Rabbi Sofer, and these comments are making me want to vomit.
