If lost, you can call help right away, instead of walking deeper and deeper. If ch'v something terrible were to occur, you might have a few secs to alert 911, as in the case of the 3 boys, even if in that case it was nebach too late.

I go hiking in America all the time.  Now I always have my cell with me.  But most places where I go hiking do not have service so in most cases if chas vshalom something happened and I was seperated from my group I would be in trouble.

That being said its crucial to always be with your buddy.

They have not released the friends story at all. It is very strange that the Israelis have kept him and his story under wraps. I hope they are not playing such a dirty game, but I wouldn't put it past them...

Doesn't really make much sense. If the Israeli government  believes that Hamas kidnapped him why would getting a confession from his friend help. At some point Hamas will publicize that they have him, they would want people to know they did this.
