American express giving out $40 statement credits for an offer error

I saw a $40 credit to my account last week. I finally called to find out what it was for and they said that they recently had an offer that if you made a purchase at modnique.com you get up to $40 back. Amex said that there was an error and they don't know who made purchases there so they are paying out to anyone who saved the offer!

Did you only save it to 1 card or is the credit once per account ?

I got a random credit once from a  tiger direct amex offer.  Never asked why. Guess it was the same reason.

Sounds like it's only one per account that saved the offer, and also not for AU's

That wouldn't be fair for the people that actually did make the purchase on au cards.

As a matter of fact, I don't remember saving the offer at all. Just whenever I sign on I save all the offers.

This does not make any sense, what is so hard to generate a report for whoever made a purchase at that store and at least only give to those who shopped there ?

Probably all the saved promotions are showing up as purchases.
