DDMS?:  I do believe you will be setting yourself up if you go DDMS.  You will be teaching a new hack IMO.   You are getting people from other sites more and more now.    They are most likely not G-d fearing  (Of course, there are always exceptions on both ends as we obviously saw here!)   What a wonderful challenge you will be offering them!  Dan is vulnerable. $$$  :o 8)

SHARE:  When something horrific, unfathomable happens you want to be able to talk about it and share.  You did that with those of us here who respect and support you.  Send them a link?  Why?  To show them you are confused, soft, and hurting now?  I wouldn't... on the chance that they are not reading this.

POA:  Advice? Yes, but your plan of action (POA) should not be public IMO.   You want the ball in your court, not in the public arena of a forum or certainly not DDMS.  I think they should be taught a lesson that they won't forget!  On the chance that they are reading this...please check your email tomorrow.

HELP OR SYMPATHY:  If you still feel you need to go DDMS, what is your goal?  To warn people?  Help others?  Get sympathy?  Getting poor you sympathy will make you vulnerable and weak.  Not fitting for your image IMO.   So how do you warn and help people without giving potential hackers ideas?  Without giving fame to this/these callous criminal(s)?  (Yes, it's stealing.)   What if you  posted "With the breaches of security that are rampant now, I have compiled a list of ..." without any personal connection?   If this doesn't feel right, you may still need sympathy and then it may not be wise to post DDMS.

BRACHA:  May this be a loving kapara from HaKadosh Baruch Hu for you in these last days of Elul.  (And may the rest of us never have to have such a shocking kapara!)  Chasiva v'chasima toiva to you and your loved ones.

+1 on every point.

What do you think I should do?

Why are you hesitant to aid IHG in their investigation or to go to law enforcement on your own? Is it Mesirah Phobia or are you feeling rachmanus toward the person who victimized you?

מה זה?
It's a real thing. Unfortunately.

Jews have forever been told by their Rabbi's that they are not allowed to report another Yid to the authorities even if they've committed a crime. You must first go to Beis Din; and only once they've exhausted all options, you might be given a Heter to involve the local law.

The topic of Mesirah usually comes up in cases of sexual abuse, where people have gotten away with things that they shouldn't have, because the "victim" is afraid to speak up, since they were taught that they are not allowed to.

Article on issue.
Opinion on issue.

If that is the Halchah then that's how it has to be. The question is, is there toeles l'haba and even if there is

One may not decide alone—a shaalah must be asked of a rov and/or beis din in each case.

I only quoted this part of your post because, IMHO, the two topics aren't comparable, and you won't get an argument from me there.

Why would going public result in setting himself up? He is no more vulnerable than anyone else

Thats why i think it's a bad idea to post on ddms it will just turn into a battlefield and it will definitely lead to copy cats.
On a different note: I can't fathom how stupid someone can be to use his name. Unless he is already aware that companies like ihg wont go after him. Which i assume is because its probably not financially worth it to go after the person. It's much cheaper to just give back the points.

Great point.
There are 2 options. Block comments or Dan will have to censure many comments.

Most big companies don't go after these scammers unless it's major numbers. even banks and stuff like identity theft and credit card fraud.

I know from all the times I was scammed with someone using my cancelled bank of America debit card on planes (old scam but sadly still apparently works)

Wow. Wild story. It was a little head-spinning and hard to follow.
Dan, I think you should establish some sort of deterrent here as this guy sounds like a professional scammer who will just keep doing it. I don't know what that deterrent could be though.

I Don't think a professional scammer would book hotel rooms on his own name.... Sounds like a guy who will end up in prison pretty soon....

Not necessarily. Unfortunately there are plenty of people who do things like this often enough thinking it's no big deal, and don't ever end up in jail.

The guy who scammed me was foolish too and I was able to track him easily.
I couldn't snitch on him as the rav said that as long as I get my money refunded, I shouldn't file a complaint against him.
But the companies couldn't care less, even though the numbers add up to a couple of thousand dollars!

WTH are these ravs thinking?!  Do they not care about other past and future victims?  They should be prosecuted.  I would love to turn in one of these criminal abettors. Or better yet, break into their houses and rob them blind.  Then let's see if they don't call the police...

That's actually why I was hesitant to post the story at all. I'm setting myself up for more of these issues.
He did it over the phone with a dumb rep.
IHG is pathetic.
I don't get it. He did this all without even your account #??
