Response to naysayers:
Some of you are unbelievable. All the post does is encourage you to be careful with your personal information, to think hard about the type of schemes you are getting yourself into and to excersize caution and discretion with credit/financial decisions. So the only people whose parnassah is getting screwed by this are those that are relying on duping others to some extent.

Not to mention every Dr and dentist you've ever gone to that thinks it's necessary to ask for
Who fills that out?
I leave it blank every time.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

No need for a college or insurance to have you SSN.
Either way, you also give them all your mother's maiden name?
You can technically get out of any of those, but the majority don't.
I agree with the article, just nitpicking at your words.

I am not disagreeing with you I would just take it easy on the victims. We know they share responsibility but I think they feel bad enough as it is.
"LESS IS MORE" It is the cumulative effect that kills deals!!! How many times do I have to say this?  >:(

Waiting to see how many comments you will get for some new information to some out there who never even thought of such a way to ms,(Your going to have every tom,*ick and Harry read this post of yours, so I don't think it's smart to publish such info.(im sure you will be hearing more stories about an airline purchase which I can't get a refund on then the farms.)

"The farm proceeded to book refundable travel reservations to trigger hundreds of thousands of signup bonus points for the farm and then they closed all the cards they opened."

If there's a better way to express what or how they spent it and avoid mentioning extras.

Other then that ready to be published..
(Going to be hearing about this post for the next while after its published.)

I feel bad for all those who were successful in giving over there info to the farm and making exactly what they were promised, they will now assume they will or could be scammed in the near future. (Well the way you feel dan seems like they deserve that scare and should avoid ever making that mistake again.)

That's an interesting question: who gained more, the average family who follows dansdeals or the average couple that works with these farms? I wonder...

I think the farms have helped more people make chasunas than Dan has, no offense.
Who do you think you are fooling? You think you are going to pull a quick one on your Creator? Good luck with that.

But it's mamish ganeiva. Those companies then sell those
points, lying that it was created with kosher spending, and then those frequent flier mile accounts get closed, causing major financial losses to the buyers.

Is it?

Of course not. Buyers know the risks. The upside makes it worth it.

Nicely done!

One correction: The final paragraph should be "did you or someone you know give over..."

While I agree with the above about removing the explicit mention of refundables, I think you should place stronger emphasis on the fact they use shady methods which could do anything from irreparably ruin your credit score to get you banned from financial institutions. Basically, add a how and why to the "affect the future wrt buying a house" part.
I know the post says this but, like most people are saying, it's naivete which is sucking people in, so this post needs to be very clear about what the scam is (being that you're calling it a scam).

Also perhaps it could do with a more intriguing title. "giving away your social: scam or legit?" "is your social worth $10,000?" or something more click baity.

And if you want to really go "journalist", send an inquiry to the publications who post their ads, and ask if they have any standards or requirements for advertisers, and if they vouch for the farms. The responses, if there are any, might be telling.

Buyers know the risks.
The majority don't. They see an ad and Yoily R. or Chani M. saying how it literally saved their lives.

Do you really think that there's no farms operated by a ddf member? (and if so they will be sticking up for themselves!)

Define risk. To publish innuendo that there's a likelihood that it may happen, there should be evidence substantiating that there is more of a risk here than giving it to a doctor, hospital, or TV subscription. That's why I assumed there were data points in this thread to that effect.

Even the operators could admit there is inherent risk in giving away your social to people with no credentials.

Define risk. To publish innuendo that there's a likelihood that it may happen, there should be evidence substantiating that there is more of a risk here than giving it to a doctor, hospital, or TV subscription.
Dan doesn't make such comparisons. He speaks of the risk, and mentions real cases of troubles that arose.

I have no skin in this. I know of no one that used a farm, and no one who runs one. All this is purely anecdotal for me.

There is inherent risk in using a farm, which the farmers are very clearly not informing their customers of. (Sure, it would ruin their business if they did.)

So Dan, whose business is strongly linked to this world, is advising people of the risks. No burden of proof is required for that.

Just because someone else also takes your social unnecessarily doesn't mean Dan can't speak about farms.
