Response to naysayers:
Some of you are unbelievable. All the post does is encourage you to be careful with your personal information, to think hard about the type of schemes you are getting yourself into and to excersize caution and discretion with credit/financial decisions. So the only people whose parnassah is getting screwed by this are those that are relying on duping others to some extent.

Feel free to borrow my letter to Ami:

To Whom it May Concern,
While perusing your excellent magazine, I was very disturbed to see an ad on p. 83 for the anonymous outfit that offers thousands for 'just calling'.
This 'business' is applying for credit cards in other peoples names, misstating their income, getting them approved for credit cards and then spending thousands in order to fet miles. The customer receives financial compensation if it all works out.

Among the numerous issues:

a) it is very possibly a federal crime to impersonate others (even with permission) when applying for a credit card.
b) The applicant's income is generally inaccurate. Misstating income on a credit application is a crime that people have most definitely been jailed for.
b) your readers are being encouraged to hand over their social security number and other very personal information to virtual strangers. This is a ripe situation for mass identity theft.
c) the spending is done via refundable tickets and other dubious means, which are against the rules of the credit card companies
d) the customer will very possibly be blacklisted and never be able to apply for a credit card from that company.

The customers are not being educated about any of the above, they are being told to hand over their social and their wife's social in exchange for $5000. The innocent readership of your magazine will be severely taken advantage of.

In addition there was a Kol Koreh against this practice signed by many rabanim in Lakewood (where it began).

I urge you to discontinue the ads immediately, and perhaps publish a feature article explaining the dangers of identity theft and fraudulent credit card applications to your readership.

Thank you
Any response from them ?

Misstating income has only been prosecuted when a person defaulted on a loan. If you include falsehoods in your letter, it will not be taken seriously.

Also your first statement about it being possibly a federal crime to apply with someones permission, desperately needs a source - if one exists.

The crime jailed for is misstating income. sometimes civil, sometimes criminal. Who's to say these guys will pay the bill? where's the falsehood?

I'm quite certain this was addressed upthread. definitely covered by state penal codes (e.g section 532 of the CA penal code). But I'm quite certain it's covered by the Federal code, especially once it becomes interstate as credit cards do.

I'm not a lawyer, and I may be wrong on one or more points, but my main point, which comes through regardless, is that it's irresponsible. And I think the more of us (people who agree with me) that say so, the better chance of it being effective.
If you disagree, I'm not here to argue with you. I can see the arguments being made.

I wrote Ami a letter too.

I just believe that many of your points are very weak.
