$75 fee:

-21+ days prior to departure is based on the departing city time zone, not the booking city time zone.

EDIT: I managed to call in and have them waive the fee when it was within 21 days in departing city time zone but not by booking city time zone

UPDATE: AA has removed all close-in fees

Plenty of time between now and d-day to find award space and book for pre d-day prices.
Even for flying in April?

Im flying in July.
And... you booked or are somehow hoping July space will open before 03/22? Cause it doesnt look like that happens. It seems like a yr out or 0-10 days is the window.

Since AA lets you make routing/date changes and upgrade from J to F for free on award bookings, would the following be possible?

Book CPT-DOH-PHL-LAX now as one award in J for 75k, upgrade to CPT-DOH-AUH-JFK/LHR-LAX in F as 2 awards?

What about the reverse: Book CPT-DOH-AUH-LAX as 2 awards now, then switch it to CPT-DOH-PHL-LAX as one award in J later?

As long as space is open on EY I would think so.

What about the reverse? Will they refund miles if I book all on QR and it counts as one award?

I believe you will incur a fee for "downgrading" from F to J.

A) I am still hoping for seats to open up.
B) You wanted to know if there is a chance to score seats pre deval for later out and I am an example that you can.

I wouldn't be downgrading from F to J, just switching from a 2-award J to a 1-award J.

you mean redeposit?
+1?

on the same flight same class?

I understand that it is possible. Its not hard to get for dates a yr or 0-10 days out. I'm asking re specific dates, dates that are more than 10days from 3/22 but only by a week or two (April time)

Looking for another F seat to open up on my route.

It depends on the airline in particular. Different airlines have different patterns of releasing space. Also depends on Y,J or F.

So you have no idea about a 2-award trip to a 1-award trip in the same class?

Looking for another F seat to open up on my route.
Understood. I was referring to the q I asked earlier...
How about if I find (pre-deval) a route with F availability for post deval. Say JAL or something. Then post deval when the CX F opens, pay the $75 to reroute (keeping the O&D the same).

Anyway, I know you say there is plenty of time but I'd like to book one way now and OW after 12/31. I want good use of the 10% yrly refund.

Going from 1 award to 2 awards or v.v. will result in a $150 fee.

why would 1 to 2 be subject to a fee? Isnt it just adding a new ticket? even from J to F is a regular upgrade subject to $75 within 21 days. Thats all, no?

Not in @yehoshua's scenario.
