$75 fee:

-21+ days prior to departure is based on the departing city time zone, not the booking city time zone.

EDIT: I managed to call in and have them waive the fee when it was within 21 days in departing city time zone but not by booking city time zone

UPDATE: AA has removed all close-in fees

Not in @yehoshua's scenario.
Is that because hes changing the routing (even though hes keeping the O/D)?
Im looking to book J or Y on CNX-HKG-LAX-JFK and then upgrading to J or F on CX or changing the route to CNX-HKG-NRT-LAX-JFK for J or F on JL. That requires $150?

Changing from an all-ow award itin(QR/AA) to an itin that includes a non-ow carrier (EY) will always trigger the $150 change fee.

Going from 1 award to 2 awards or v.v. will result in a $150 fee.
2 phone reps I spoke to said there won't be a fee as long as you keep the class of service the same or upgrade. Did you try that personally?

Even with this?...

So what you're  saying is it's not the 2-award to 1-award that triggers it, it's the fact that EY isn't part of OW. Interesting.

It's because he's changing from 1 award to 2 awards which involves a redeposit of miles.

No fee. Those are both 1 award and you are not changing the o/d.

Yes, changing from 1 award to 2 awards in your case involves a redeposit of miles and will incur a $150 fee.

More likely they didn't understand what you were saying, and it makes absolutely no difference what the rep thinks the rule should be, the only thing that matters is how the computer prices it out, an AA rep will almost never override the computer.
How about give it a try - book and change and we'll see who's right :)?

before his sources, whered you get that non-one world carrier triggers a charge?

It's because he's changing from 1 award to 2 awards which involves a redeposit of miles.
why would he change the whole award that way? why cant he ticket the new award separately and up/downgrade or change the orriginal ticket on its own? what would be the sense in redepositing just to rebook?

Oy! I think we should call bowtie in to put some arrows and squares into this presentation.

1) CPT-DOH-PHL-LAX = 1 award in J for 75k miles.
2) CPT-DOH-AUH = 1 award in J for 45k miles
3) AUH-JFK/LHR-LAX = 1 award in J for 67.5k and F for 90k miles.

To change from routing #1 to routing #2+3 will require a redeposit of 30k miles.
Redeposit of miles = $150 fee.
