But if you know you want to fly somewhere in business or first class that’s getting significantly more expensive I’d risk it and use the same cancel without redeposit method. Find the availability on your preferred route for any date and book it. Then after it’s ticketed just use the cancel button on AA.com. That puts the itinerary in an inactive state. When you find dates that work for you just call AA and give them your existing record locator and they should be able to put in those dates without any charge.

Should I hedge my bets by booking and canceling without the redeposit? Or just leave the reservation until the miles post and then try upgrading at that time?

I got an email from AA asking me to vote for Aadvantage program in the Freddie Awards. I emailed back "is this a joke?" But alas, the email simply bounced back.

I guess I read it wrong. I figured I'd be able to book and cancel J. And then when the miles post, rebook just with F.

So just booked an AA F itinerary: HKT - HKG (KA J) HKG - HND (JAL - J) NRT - DFW (AA F) DFW - City where I live. it's all there was remotely available for my travel dates. If CX F or JAL F becomes available after the deval, will I be able to change it? Or is it considered an airline switch?

People can think and say what they want, but no one will know forsure until after 3/22.
