Rosh Hashana Question
« on: September 04, 2013, 02:44:33 PM »
Why are the days of repentance and judgment at the beginning of the year and not at the end of the year?

Anyone know an answer, or lead me to a source discussing this question?
If you don't care why would you comment?

How can we be judged on the upcoming year?

We're being judged on our actions of the previous year to determine whether we'll be granted the privilege of living for the upcoming year.   So why not judge at the end of the year?

Isn't it so?
We can't be judged the last day of the years cause we gotto get judged for the last day as well, so the year has to end and then we can be judged for it.

Under that argument, there would have to be a day in between the old year and the new year.

The judgment process lasts for 10 days.  What's the difference if they're in the old year or the new year?

10 days is only for the ppl who weren't judged on rush hashana, as chazal told us that tzadikim are written in the book of life in rush hashana and the opposite for reshuim, only the in-between ppl are pushed off till yum kippur for a better chance.

After thought, there seems to be a connection between the anniversary of creation and judgment.  הַיּוֹם הֲרַת עוֹלָם, הַיּוֹם יַעֲמִיד בַּמִּשְׁפָּט.  Perhaps an analogy can be drawn to the melech basar v'dam, Paaroh, who celebrated his birthday by calling the convicts from their jail cells to determine a final judgment.  Kings use auspicious occasions to demonstrate their kingship.  Perhaps that is so with the King of Kings as well.

Thoughts?

Any thoughts on why the Torah doesn't mention that RH is the Yom Hadin?

For meaning of the word elul, look at the targum to the first pasuk in shelach, vihuvein. Based on RSZ"O.

IIRC Rav Dessler is maarich on this question. (Maybe Rav Chaim Friedlander).

It just occured to me, that the answer may be, that because according to Tosfos (תוספות ר"ה טז: ד"ה נחתמין) the ikar din is on your portion in Olam Haba. And Olam Haba is never explicitly mentioned in the Torah.

Which begs the question - why isn't Olam Haba mentioned explicitly in the Torah? Well this question has been discussed by the Rishonim already. :)

teshuva tefila and tzedaka are all the avoda of Elul, עשית is a higher level of teshva not on our sins.
