Strange question about stopovers
« on: September 16, 2014, 10:20:19 PM »
Can someone help? We have a return flight booked for next month coming back home. It is a stopover flight. However, we are thinking of just taking the first segment and staying in the stopover city for a few days. So here are questions:

1. Can we arrange to pick up our luggage at the stopover city instead of having it go all the way home?
2. If we choose to not pick up our luggage, will our luggage continue on without us?
3. If our luggage does end up going all the way home, will they allow one of our family members to pick it up on our behalf?

I hope I was clear about all this.
Thanks in advance!

How do you plan on getting home after missing the connection?

Well, I would call the airline to see if they want to cancel the second leg for free.

Definitely a good idea. ;D  However this would double the luggage fees. I would probably prefer that they go straight to the destination. Then we can have someone else pick them up or pick them up ourselves three days later.

Generally they will not send off your luggage if you don't board the flight.

The delta rep I spoke to told me that only the passengers can pick up the luggage. So I don't know if family members would be able to take them for you.

The stopover is less than an hour. Also I would be flying with the luggage for one segment. YOU think they would pull the luggage off the flight?

I have experienced the opposite.
who checks to make sure you're not taking someone else's luggage?
When I spoke to a luggage handler in airport, it seems that they will have somebody waiting to pull it if you don't board flight.

Friend of mine asked for his luggage pulled said he didn't know anything about the hidden city I booked him etc. US AIR rep was nice enough to pull it. This is domestic in PHL.

They don't check when it first comes out, but if you come later to pick it up, yes they will check you out

I found this solution from here, they had a similar question.

"Have the luggage only tagged to LAX at KOA. Totally fine to do so. If asked, say you have stuff to give to friend in LA."

So what do you plan on doing?
I was thinking of having someone I know that works in the Ben Gurion airport to take my luggage. But I am nervous that it won't get there at all.

@ yehuda s: what happened with your luggage?
I had a miserable story since Alitalia refused to tag my luggages to fco and as of now I don't know where my luggage is. Any advice?
