JJ1000's list of top restaurants and dishes in Miami:

1. Backyard BBQ (New chef in mid 2017 totally new menu): Burnt ends, 2nd cut brisket, Dinosaur Rib, BBQ Sundae, BBQ Burger, Lemon/Apple/Smores desserts.

2. Fuego: Flatbreads are a must, then the back ribs, pastrami egg rolls, smores dessert, perfect date drink are good. (Update March 2017, the app chef and bbq chef isn't there anymore and the quality has been spotty from recent reviews.)

3. 26: Sushi pizza is  a must I prefer it with baked salmon, then the Passion Mojito, Sushi Teriyaki tempuraed, Cilantro Aioli dip and truffle fires, all of their soups are good.

4. Zak The Baker. Menu changes too often to recommend stuff. Not Cholov Yisroel.

5. Kosh: Chocolate souffle and korean beef with extra sauce are good.

6. Foozo: Foozolis, the caprese foozoli with extra balsamic sauce, their pastas are good as well.

Also notable unique places are The Freeze which makes ices, serendipity makes ice cream (there is one next door to ZTB now), and Miami Beach Chocolates turtles and bark.

Anything on the west coast of FL other then Airboats in the Everglades and (my favorite part of South FL, the beautiful) Naples Beach?

I was just invited to be flown in to give some lectures in Miami ... in early July. :( The speeches alone aren't enough to fill my time there or make the trip worthwhile, so even with my expenses covered, is it worth it to go there in the summer?

I'm not a huge foodie, so the restaurant scene isn't enough of a draw, and I wouldn't be comfortable going to mixed beaches.

Are there enough activities there (e.g. Everglades) that would be pleasurable in July to fill a few days to justify making a trip out of it? Or will I be miserable the whole time due to humidity, storms, and mosquitoes?

Yes, Miami is hot in July. So swimming, either beach or pool, is a major draw. An early morning, or evening, walk on the boardwalk/promenade might be nice, and you might find some isolated pool/beach time at a quiet time or location. There is a deserted area at Haulover Park that was frequented by Chasidic men, but be careful as there are no lifeguards there and there was a tragic drowning last year. Another activity may be boating, or fishing, if you are interested.

And if you are going to Everglades (all the way out west), Naples Beach is usually quite empty. And gorgeous.

Thanks for the quick replies. The speeches are over the weekend, so I could just come in for a quick Shabbos getaway with lodging provided close to shul, but once I have to pack up and fly to Miami (where I haven't been in quite some time), I'd like to come for 4ish days and see the Everglades and some of South Florida (though no interest in theme parks in Orlando).

If it helps, I could arrange to include July 4 in the itinerary if there's a good fireworks show over the water. I also enjoy watersports like jetskiing and parasailing if not located on a mixed beach. Naples Beach also sounds interesting - how hard is it to find a deserted section to enjoy? Or are the weather and mosquitoes so oppressive that it won't be much of a vacation?
