JJ1000's list of top restaurants and dishes in Miami:

1. Backyard BBQ (New chef in mid 2017 totally new menu): Burnt ends, 2nd cut brisket, Dinosaur Rib, BBQ Sundae, BBQ Burger, Lemon/Apple/Smores desserts.

2. Fuego: Flatbreads are a must, then the back ribs, pastrami egg rolls, smores dessert, perfect date drink are good. (Update March 2017, the app chef and bbq chef isn't there anymore and the quality has been spotty from recent reviews.)

3. 26: Sushi pizza is  a must I prefer it with baked salmon, then the Passion Mojito, Sushi Teriyaki tempuraed, Cilantro Aioli dip and truffle fires, all of their soups are good.

4. Zak The Baker. Menu changes too often to recommend stuff. Not Cholov Yisroel.

5. Kosh: Chocolate souffle and korean beef with extra sauce are good.

6. Foozo: Foozolis, the caprese foozoli with extra balsamic sauce, their pastas are good as well.

Also notable unique places are The Freeze which makes ices, serendipity makes ice cream (there is one next door to ZTB now), and Miami Beach Chocolates turtles and bark.

Some updates and opinions on the restaurant scene:

1) There's a newish (open for several months now) restaurant called Vgan Kitchen in the NMB/Aventura area.
As you probably guessed, it is vegan. I don't know where to begin because I left this place completely mesmerized.
Even if you couldn't care less for the ingredients of what enters your body, this place is worth a visit just to admire
their artistic creativity in creating mock meat and dairy dishes.

But that's not where it ends; everything I ordered was IMHO (and my spouse's) absolutely delicious, and the taste is
so real and authentic, no garbage in your food.
Everything is made from scratch, so it may take some time for your food to be ready.
In addition to being vegan, everything is organic, gluten free, and soy free.
Just imagine the creativity involved, I just thought it was astounding what they came up with for a place that makes such claims.
I cannot shower enough praise on this really cool place, what more can I say.
It ain't cheap, but it's still a bargain compared to the upscale eateries.

2) At the complete opposite end of the spectrum (health-wise at least), Dixie BBQ (also NMB/Aventura area) was a refreshing site.
What exactly did I find refreshing? Their prices! I was totally shocked at how cheap they are (even for NY standards).
But more so was their friendly service. The manager especially is a really friendly guy and makes you feel well taken care of.
I was very surprised not to be treated like chopped liver as I've usually come to expect from these type of cheap Israeli joints at this price range.
The food was nothing special, typical for what you'd expect from these fast-food chains.
But late hours, good service, and cheap food means it's a likely stop on trips to Miami.

3) Hate to argue with some of the foodies here, but I found the new Nona (formerly Noma) bakery in Surfside very disappointing.
I tried a few items and thought they were really nothing to write home about (to put it mildly).
Perhaps it's just not my style :) .

4) Strange that 2 of the aforementioned restaurants haven't made it to the Wiki yet, but I will add it now.
1. Thanks for the heads up, will check it out, what were the standout dishes?

3. Alol! Nona has absolutely NOTHING to do with the fantastic NoMa.... So much so they changed their name to Nona.... NoMa is still NoMa http://nomamiami.com

Yes!  My mistake - they are different buildings but connected by an airside path. I forgot. I hope that I didn't mess anyone up.

Taking our first trip to Miami with some friends for a 30th birthday in June! None of us (4 ladies) have ever been!

Cheapest flights are to Ft Lauderdale - would it be better to uber to Miami/Miami Beach or rent a car for the 3 days?

Could anyone recommend a good neighborhood to stay at that has a mix of a good eating/beach scene, ideally walkable, and possibly lgbt-friendly?

We have status with Hyatt and Marriott, but open to other places/hotels that would have a good relaxing vibe and pool. I kind of imagine Miami to be like Palm Springs which we loved. I could be wrong...

Congrats,

Depending what u want to rent, and were u end up staying, Uber is pretty cheap but can get a bit confusing in the airport, and renting a car would cost you parking, gas etc...

IMHO Bal harbor, it has alot of kosher food but a bit more crowded then MB, and Miami is a city on the beach dont think PS is.

Never been to palm springs but my impression is that it's a quiet and relaxing town. Miami is quite busy at all hours, with huge resorts and high rise apartments all in close proximity to Collins Ave.
